Behind-the-scenes secrets could turn deadly for Desmond and Riley
Life in the Heights has never been easy for seventeen-year-old Riley Frost, but when she’s publicly dumped and outed at the same time, she becomes an immediate social outcast at her high school. So Riley swears off romance and throws herself into solving the shocking murder of her favorite teacher, Ms. Dunn.
Riley turns to her best friend, budding filmmaker Desmond Brandt, for help. What she doesn’t know is that Dez has been secretly directing her life, blackmailing her friends, and hoping his manipulations will make her love him. When his schemes go too far, Dez’s web of lies threatens to destroy both of their lives.

10 Things I Learned Writing My Book
By Dawn Klehr

Though The Cutting Room Floor is my YA debut, it is not the first book I wrote. But it was definitely the most difficult … and most enjoyable. Funny how those two things sometimes go together. I learned so many lessons writing this one! Here are the ten most interesting:

Each book demands to be written its own way. TCRF was written in what I’d call layers—I’ve never done this before and don’t think I will again. But that’s the way this book wanted to be born.

I’m absolutely paralyzed until I have my first thirty pages written. Until this is done—and done well—I can’t move forward. And I’m basically miserable to be around.

That said, I am happiest when I’m writing. Must remember this!!

When characters are screaming at you, it’s best to let them have their way for a while. They usually know what they’re doing. In this case, Dez’s POV was born because he required it.

Let your book become what it wants to be. TCRF started as a romance, but turned into a thriller. Hmmm. What does that say about me?

I love to revise. I really do!

I hate writing the first draft. I really, really do!!

I like to listen to music when writing the first draft, but need silence when revising.

No matter how much I love a chapter—the writing, backstory, special moment—if it doesn’t propel the story forward, it gets the ax. My editor taught me this one.

And finally, there’s nothing better than being up late at night with a bowl of candy, my laptop, and interesting characters talking in my head.

I have a feeling this list will change with each book I write. Always changing and growing—it’s what makes this job so awesome!
